3rd European Conference on Sustainable Urban Mobility Plans

Bremen, Germany

Over 300 delegates are expected to attend this free conference, the principal annual event for all those involved in turning the Sustainable Urban Mobility Plan (SUMP) concept into practice.

The European Commissioner for Transport, Violeta Bulc, is one of many speakers already confirmed for the event, which is taking place on 12 and 13 April 2016. Ms Bulc will lead an interactive discussion on how the take-up of the SUMP concept can be accelerated across Europe.

The SOLUTIONS project will be present at the conference, hosting the B4 parallel session on Wednesday 13 April at 11am.

Titled ‘SUMP goes global! Fostering two-way learning and exchange channels’, the session will gather examples from international exchange within the SOLUTIONS project to demonstrate how the SUMP concept has inspired planners on other continents, and what can be learned in Europe from other planning approaches.

Also in Bremen is Nikolaus von Peter, from the Cabinet of the Commissioner for Transport, who will outline the latest European Union policy initiatives, and Rainer Bomba, State Secretary from the German Federal Ministry for Transport and Digital Infrastructure.

A host of excursions around Bremen – the winner of the 2014 SUMP award - are arranged to demonstrate how planning processes are shaping the creation of low-car (and low-carbon) neighbourhoods; the promotion of vehicle sharing; electrification of public transport; the optimised management of freight; and the enhancement of cycle infrastructure.

8th European Conference on Sustainable Cities & Towns

Transformative Action: the potential for Europe

Bilbao, Spain
Basque Country

The 8th European Conference on Sustainable Cities & Towns, held from 27-29 April 2016 in the Basque Country, takes place at a crucial time - following the COP21 in Paris, which resulted in a post-Kyoto framework to address climate change.

While being called upon to meet global challenges, local and regional governments also face environmental, financial and societal issues in Europe. The conference will reflect the urgency of the challenges and present a way to address them through transformative action.

The three-day conference programme will offer plenty of opportunities for learning and networking by means of plenaries, breakout sessions, panels, a Mayors Session, and Mobile Workshops in the Basque Country counties of Bizkaia, Gipuzkoa and Araba.

The conference provides a great opportunity to explore a country which has transformed itself, having changed its focus on industry to embrace modern service-based economy. Its newly adopted Environmental Programme for 2020 shows a firm commitment to improving the environment and aligns with current European and international strategies on job creation, enhancing standards of living and building a low-carbon economy.

The conference is hosted by ICLEI – Local Governments for Sustainability, the Basque Government, Bizkaia County Council and Bilbao City Council, with the involvement of Udalsarea 21 - Basque Network of Municipalities for Sustainability.
